With our focus on income generation this month we’re highlighting inventive ways in which museums are creating ways to generate revenue. As February also marks a momentous anniversary for women, with the centenary of some women in the UK receiving the right to vote, we want to highlight a fundraising project from Glasgow Women’s Library that celebrates the contributions of remarkable women.
Women on the Shelf was launched by GWL back in 2012 when the library was seeking funds to secure a permanent home for the collection. The supporters of the campaign can sponsor a book, a shelf, or even an entire library section and dedicate it to a women of their choice. Women on the Shelf is still going strong today. Part of the enduring success of the campaign is the very personal nature of paying tribute to women who have influenced our lives in some way, be they the women who raised us or the pioneers who forged new paths in society for others to follow.
The video below looks at the project in more detail and speaks with some of the supporters of the campaign about the women they chose to commemorate.
