Collections bursaries 2010-11

Every year, MGS provides collections research and travel bursaries to curators and collections managers (honorary and paid) in our full member museums who are interested in developing their skills and increasing their knowledge of a sparsely documented or researched collection in their care.

In 2009-10 awards were made to staff at eight organizations across Scotland, who took the opportunity to spend time with collections specialists, visit other museums and sites (in the UK and internationally), undertake residential study courses and attend conferences, and research other collections in order to share expertise or improve access to their collections.

“As a Museum with a specialised collection we felt that it was essential for us to visit other museums with similar collections so that we could find out how they can help us, and how we can help them.  This has opened up new lines of communication and has inspired display ideas, research options, and new storage methods so that we can present and store our collections in the best possible way.”

If you are interested in finding out more, you can read about some of their experiences on the collections pages on the MGS website.

Guidelines and application forms for 2010-2011 will be available to download shortly, but in the meantime, for more information on how to get involved or to register a note of interest in applying for a bursary, feel free to contact me by comment or via our website.
