Scotland’s museums are getting ready to open their doors, vaults and imaginations for the annual Festival of Museums, a weekend-long celebration of the magic of heritage, science and history, so be sure to pencil museum fun into your diaries for Fri 13 – Sun 15 May!

From little ones to big kids, there’s something for everyone in a programme of exciting activities taking place across Scotland over one weekend. Visit Pictish camps, get hands on with famous architecture, dance the night away or explore the fantastic on a journey into your imagination!

The exciting programme was launched at Lauriston Castle, by Lily Donald (4) and Freya Hunter (5), both from Edinburgh. The girls got a sneak peek of the venue’s upcoming Secret Garden event, a traditional fete in a hidden world of gardens, woodland and all things magical on the beautiful lawns and courtyard of the castle. Meet creatures and critters in a children’s animal handling session; enjoy storytelling, a magician, a woodland trail and face painting; and brush up on your circus skills with local circus troupe, Circus Alba, who will teach visitors some basic tricks.

Other highlights from this year’s festival include In Vogue, a renaissance fashion show at Stirling Castle; Glasgow’s Marvellous Medicine, a look into the city’s medical heritage at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons; and Joan Eardley: A Private View, a new play on the life of the artist performed by Stellar Quines at the National Galleries of Scotland.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be taking a closer look at various elements of the programme that are sure to tickle your fancy. Comic books and explosions? Check. Viking battles? We got ‘em. Silent discos? You’d better believe it! Keep a look out for our updates over the next few weeks to help you decide which events to go to. However, it’s probably best just to clear your diary and bask in the museum-y glow, trust us!
