The Skills Development Fund is an investment stream which provides funding for museums to work in partnership to run collaborative training courses / skills development programmes throughout Scotland. The roll out of this fund supports access to good quality, affordable and relevant training and skills development support for the sector, delivered by the sector. Grants from £1k are available. We have funded a variety of projects to date including:
Volunteering conference – This one-day event celebrated the work that museum volunteers do and gave them a chance to meet volunteers from other museums, tell everyone about what they do and share ideas and best practice. It was also a valuable training day for volunteers at which they learnt basic skills and practical guidance on how to tackle key museum tasks. The forum pulled upon expertise within their membership to share and exchange knowledge and skills and a variety of workshops were held in a wide range of subjects. The feedback was very positive with many participants asking for further training in a number of areas. (This could form the basis of a second application)
Staff training and support to support a Homecoming Project – The Skills Develoment Fund award will support a range of training and network support for staff and volunteers, to help them work up and deliver exciting event concepts and to benefit from the sharing of ideas and expertise. In addition provision has been made to part-fund a range of hub events and up to 30 smaller events, and a range of marketing activites including an innovative ‘heritage trail’app and the use of social networking sites.
A one day seminar with a range of speakers
Training Programme -a training programme developed to meet the needs of staff and volunteers from forum member museums. Consultation with member museums identified a collective need for training in the areas of museum documentation and interpretation for exhibitions and display. The grant supports a programme of two formal training courses delivered by museum consultants who specialise in these areas.
Museums & Galleries Management Development Programme This project will develop and deliver a bespoke management development programme for middle managers and aspiring managers in the museums and galleries sector. The project will build on the legacy and success of the management and leadership development activities delivered as part of the Regional Museums Training and Development Project.
