The always inspiring people at Scottish Book Trust (SBT) have been in touch to let us know about ways in which museums can get involved in some of their upcoming activity around Book Week Scotland.
Now in its second year, Book Week Scotland will take place from the 25th November to the 1st December. Book Week Scotland is the national celebration of reading, books and writing. There are many different strands of activity happening across the country during the week, but the following elements will be of particular interest and value to museums and galleries and their visitors:
Treasures – a free book for Book Week Scotland
The Treasures book will collect stories from people all over Scotland about the objects which they cherish the most. These will be stories about the unconventional treasures of Scotland, the stories previously untold about unexpected objects that people hold dear, because of the occasions, people and memories that they symbolise. Overall the book will paint a picture of the objects that matter most to the people of Scotland.
During Book Week Scotland you can give a copy of Treasures free to your visitors. It is a great way to add value to their visit and could be used as a lovely way to engage visitors with objects in any collection you might have.
If you would like to receive copies of Treasures, at no cost to you, to gift during Book Week Scotland please complete this brief survey monkey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Treasuresbook
Big Book Bash
To encourage as many people as possible to join in the national celebration of reading SBT are calling on organisations, businesses and individuals across the country to throw their own Big Book Bash.
A Big Book Bash is a simple celebration of reading. Your event can be as simple or as extravagant as you like from holding a reading coffee morning in your
cafe to putting together a book themed tour of your collection or property and anything in between. You could organise a Big Book Bash around gifting the Treasures book – It is entirely up to you! All we ask is that you let SBT know what you are doing and how it goes.
If you would like to put on a Big Book Bash – put on your thinking caps and keep an eye on www.bookweekscotland.com for more information.
Now I’m going to start planning MGS’s own Big Book Bash…..
