I was really glad to have the opportunity to accompany Victoria on an Accreditation verification visit to Glasgow Women’s Library (GWL) last Thursday. I’d heard a lot about the history of GWL and the various projects they’ve done, such as the heritage walks relating to women’s history in Glasgow. Their blog is a good place to read about what they are currently working on.
We made our way to their current location in the Merchant City, and first impressions on entering the library were of a bright, cheerful, welcoming space. It was great to meet the staff and hear about their plans for the future over a good cup of a tea and chocolate biscuits. GWL is working towards relocating to the Mitchell Library and fundraising for this continues as I type, see the Women on the Shelf pages on their website for more information.
I also had the opportunity to contribute to “Blue Spine” one of their newer projects. This is a newly commissioned art work by artist Shauna McMullan. Anyone can take part by providing a book which needs to a) have a blue spine or blue somewhere on the spine and b) be written by a woman. What book did I choose to be added to the art work? “Behind the Scenes at the Museum” by Kate Atkinson of course.
